You have probably heard the phrase Single Sign-On (SSO) a hundred times. Even if you don’t know exactly what it is, you’ve probably logged into something through 

 a hundred times, too. But what is it, and why do companies and people trust it so much?

 works behind the scenes to let users securely sign into different applications with a single set of login credentials. In other words, it allows the user to log into multiple services with one username and password. Once you’re logged into one service with those credentials, you don’t have to re-authenticate for another service.

In today’s digital world, nobody has the time to log in to 

 the countless applications and services that we use online. We at Toucan understand that and wanted to make your life easier. That’s why we enabled SSO on our platform.

We have gotten a lot of requests from professional Toucan users at companies and organizations about integrating their security protocols and login processes with Toucan. With this update, if you're logged in via a Toucan partner's portal, you will immediately be let into Toucan without having to do anything extra.

SSO was born out of a real need. It’s really difficult to keep track of all the places where we have to create separate accounts online. A 

 showed that the average person has 100 passwords. And who has the time to memorize all of those and constantly be typing them out?

Surely, you have felt it before: it’s the exhaustion that comes with being required to remember a lot of different passwords as part of our daily routine. The reality is that we deal with passwords more often than we realize. We need a password to enter our work computer, our email, the ATM, and even to unlock our bicycles.

Aside from the tiredness and stress, password fatigue will lead people to adopt unsafe habits that could compromise their personal information. Some people write them out on a piece of paper, some keep a document on their computer with all their passwords, and some have a note on their mobile phone. If that is your case, you are compromising your privacy and security.

 affects users, but it can also affect technical departments. What solutions do we have to deal with this 21st-century malady?

 - Most operative systems provide a mechanism to store passwords by using the user's login. Microsoft Windows provides Credential Manager and Mac OS X has Keychain. This functionality is also present in the most commonly used browsers.

 - such as KeePass, Password Safe, One Password, and NordPass. These store passwords in a database encrypted with a single password. The problem with this solution is that if someone loses that one password, they will never get back all of their passwords. On the other hand, if someone steals that password, they will have access to everything.

 - The majority of password-protected web services provide a password recovery feature that will allow users to recover their passwords via email address (or other information).

 -Why not get rid of passwords entirely?  Passwordless authentication services, replace passwords with alternative verification methods (such as biometric authentication).

 It makes logging in completely seamless. Say goodbye to memorizing countless passwords.

OAuth, SAML, and OpenID Connect (OIDC) are standard and secure login integration methods.

: SSO mitigates the risk of accessing 3rd-party sites because user passwords are not stored or managed externally.

 SSO reduces IT costs due to the lower number of IT help desk calls.

We used to have physical workspaces. When a parent told a child “I’m going to work”, it was understood that he or she would be leaving the house.

Today, many of us work in “virtual” workspaces, workspaces that are accessible from anywhere. Today, the laptop class can go to work without leaving the house.

For a lot of people it’s an office, a factory, a field, a restaurant, a hospital, or even a vehicle. People work in lots of places.

 they work hasn’t changed and won’t change. But for many white collar workers, workers who mostly work at their desks, things are changing, and the recent string of lockdowns has accelerated this change.

These workers  interact with the world through four interfaces:

Until recently – a couple of decades ago – most of those things weren’t mobile. Today they all are, and this has very profound implications on the flexibility of these people’s workspace.

, although it still exists, has been virtualized, i.e., digitized. Sure, we still see lots of papers in offices, but it’s no longer necessary. I still know people who print their emails, but I personally haven’t owned a printer in 15 years.

 are just as accessible through a video conference as they are in person.

Today, a white collar worker is no longer bound to a workplace. He or she can work from anywhere: a traditional office, a shared workspace, a home, a boat, or even a beach. I’m writing this blog from a beach house in Southern Italy. I could just as well be in the mountains in France, or an office in New York.

So if a workspace has already been virtualized, what do we mean by 

When I work, some things I interact with – people and paper – have been virtualized, and others – telephones and computers – have been made portable. But I don’t work in a 

I work virtually, in whatever space I happen to be.

. In this space you can bump into colleagues, you can have lunch together, you can meet and share a whiteboard, etc. It’s just like being in the office with your colleagues.

As much as I like working virtually from anywhere, I sometimes miss working with people in a shared space. Needless to say, I’m not alone. A lot of people miss being together with their colleagues. And of course, when there’s a need, the boffins try to address it. We’re addressing it in two ways:

When designers recreate something digitally they frequently use a representation of a physical analog in order to make the transition from the physical to the virtual as intuitive as possible. Here’s an example. When you delete a file from your computer, do you put it in a trash can? Right. That works, even though we all know it’s an analogy.

If sticking to physical analogs is your design approach, you are aiming to create 

, i.e., virtual spaces in which desks look like desks and people who look like people. In these spaces you can “walk” from your desk to a meeting room, or into someone else’s office. In order to simulate all those things, you need VR. You need to strap goggles onto your face, and get to work.

I’ve done it. It’s kind of cool. It’s great for discussions and it’s great for watching media together. But it’s beyond terrible for working on a spreadsheet or for writing email. Keyboards in VR are a bit of a joke. Until we really nail voice interfaces or haptic gloves, I won’t be spending my days in a “realistic” virtual office.

Now, let’s talk about lighter weight virtual workspaces.

Sometimes we don’t need a perfect analogue to create a useful digital alternative. My favorite example is 

. An office facilitates communication. And so does Slack, even though they aren’t remotely similar. Of course an office enables many richer interactions, but they aren’t always necessary. And Slack automatically saves context in a way that isn’t possible when conversations are in person.

Slack, and other collaborative tools are able to replicate in-person workspace functions without simulating an office environment the way we do in VR.

How does Toucan support virtual workspaces?

In offices people don’t just talk to each other in conference rooms. They stop by each other’s desks, chat in the hall, sit down for lunch together, and sometimes even leave the office for a breath of fresh air and a private chat.

Traditional video conferencing tools, like 

, are excellent digital analogues to conference rooms, but they don’t allow casual connections in different places across time. 

 two people can get together for a quick sync, either personal or professional. Or a group of co-workers can get together to polish a shared document. Or the entire company can meet – in conference mode – to watch a presentation by the HR team about upcoming benefit changes. All of these modes of interaction are possible in

Let’s start with what “it” is. I know “work modalities” sounds like the topic of some dreadful MBA lecture, but I don’t know what else to call them. (If after reading this post you think of a better term, please let me know 🙏🏻.)

Think back to two years ago when things were normal and most of us worked in offices…
You check your schedule and you notice you have a budget meeting in the Star Trek conference room in 10 minutes. You get up, go to the kitchen, make yourself another cup of coffee, and make your way over to Star Trek.

You walk in and your colleague Joe is already sitting down at the conference table.

I’m dreading this meeting. Our PR firm wants us to double our spend and Carl is going to be pissed.

You’re fine. I have to tell him we need to spin up a hot backup data center to pass our continuity audit. When he hears those numbers he’s not going to give you a second thought.

Oh my God. A complete nightmare. Last night she chewed up my favorite pair of running shoes. Almost ended up with a dead dog.

They get over it. Has she at least stopped peeing all over the house?

Carl walks to the head of the conference table, plugs his laptop into the projector, and pulls up the budget spreadsheet.

So we’re all agreed? Get me your revisions by end of day and we’ll go through this again tomorrow.

Damn, I’m late for my one-on-one with Sally. Gotta run. Hey Mary, we still have lunch at Papa Leon’s?

What did we just witness? A completely normal meeting, broken up into three parts. Before Carl walked in, you, Joe, and Mary were 

. After the meeting started, the four of you were 

. And finally, you went back to networking before leaving.

Now, I want you to fast-forward to six months ago: everyone working-from-home.

You check your schedule and you notice you have a budget meeting in Carl’s personal Zoom room in 10 minutes. You get up, go to the kitchen, make yourself another cup of coffee, and make your way back to your home office.

You log into the meeting room and see a message telling you that the host will let you in momentarily. You turn off your camera. Mute. And check Twitter. Suddenly your reading is interrupted.

Good morning! Everyone here? Can you hear me?

Hi Carl. I can hear you. Can you hear me?

Carl shares his screen. No one turns their camera on.

The meeting ends. Carl closes the Zoom room. You Slack Mary: “What a d*ck!”. Mary Slacks back: “First class. I have to go. The dog just pissed under my desk.”

When you have one meeting like that after another, without the social breaks, it’s exhausting.

Traditional video conferencing platforms don’t allow that to happen. They’re optimized for work, even though net is an integral part of work. As we often say, Zoom is tiring because it lacks humanity.

If you’ve used Toucan you know it’s a completely different experience because we’ve designed Toucan to allow seamless transitions between all three modalities:

You stop by the kitchen to grab another coffee and run into Mary who’s also getting a fresh cup.

Good to see you too! Have you seen Joe recently?

You didn’t hear? We broke up. His wife found out about us. He told me it was over, that he was leaving her, but as soon as she started giving him hell for cheating on her he asked for forgiveness and went running back. I was so pissed off. I told him never to call me again. I hope I don’t run into him at the all-hands. It’s so awkward.

Oh Mary. I’m so sorry. I had no idea...

Don’t worry, I’m almost over it. Just not sure I’ll ever trust another guy again.

You and Mary walk to the auditorium in silence. As you pass other colleagues you greet each other. You walk in, and Mary grabs your arm.

Oh no, there’s Joe. I don’t want to talk to him. Come sit with me.

You walk to the other side of the auditorium, sit down, and start talking about your dogs.

Working together online is fundamentally different than working together in person because most online tools don't allow multiple modalities. Toucan does.

Work Modalities and Where Toucan Fits

We, the developers and designers and hustlers of Startuplandia use Toucan almost exclusively for internal technical standup.

Is that because A. you all are massive hipsters or B. cause being better than zoom is apparently a low bar ?

Oh why I think it is a bit of both, yes, John D used to be a massive hipster (and has the single speed + cocktail bar to prove) and yes, toucan is generally better than zoom.

Well, how do you actually define 'better' ?

6.	Zoom has better audio AND video quality than google hangouts (Technical Attribute +0 cause who cares about hangouts)
7.	Zoom as a company is worth 90Bn ? (Irrelevant metrics +1 Wall Street)
8.	Zoom interface hasn't noticeably changed in over 2 years? (Is that even possible? -1 Zoom)
9.	Zoom has a pretty smart domain name, Zoom.us (Marketing IQ +.5 Zoom)


So after careful analysis, you see Toucan has 5 points, Wall Street has 1 point and Zoom has -.5 points. (Would you rather pay $0 for 5 points or 90BN for -.5 points? +1 Wall Street)

In the beginning were the boxes. You know the ones I mean. The boxes through which we meet when we can’t meet in person.

As many do, we hated the boxes. Stiff. Boring. Confining. The way Orwell might have imagined future human community.

So we worked and worked until we came up with a video meeting interface that felt comfortable, dynamic, social and, above all, human. This took some time. We went down many dead ends. But the final result makes people happy, so we know we got it right.

We then developed the first version of Toucan: 

The Toucan platform made it easy for people to host and attend events. They could be scheduled, configured, and managed.

Hosts used the Toucan platform to create events, thousands and thousands of events. Some were big, 200 person quiz nights, job fairs, all-hands; some were smaller; and some were very small, groups of friends getting together to catch up, co-workers brainstorming, lovers wondering when they’d finally get to meet again in person.

When we started building our social-first video platform, we focused on what allows us to be social beings:

As I said earlier, our interface work was primarily focused on 

. A few metrics tell us that we’ve been successful. Users spend more than twice as much time on Toucan than on any other video platform. 93% of event attendees speak, which is extraordinary. How many times have you attended a Zoom event and not spoken? Worse, how many times have you attended a Zoom event and not been allowed to speak?

“Shut up and engage!” no one ever said.

. When we talked to our hosts, they confirmed what we suspected. They wanted a permanent place in which they could spontaneously gather. They wanted a permanent URL that led to their own meeting place, a place to which they could invite one or one hundred people, whenever they wanted.

We listened to them, and today, we’re introducing 

 are a radical change, but like all true revolutionaries, we’re changing things quietly.


 our hosts and their attendees have grown to love over the past year. This is intentional. We don’t change things for the sake of change.

. We’re giving our hosts what they’ve been asking for.

It would be absurd if you had to give your friends new instructions every time they wanted to come visit you. Luckily, your home’s address doesn’t change. A Toucan 

’s address won’t change either. If on Monday I tell my friends that they can find me at 

, they’ll also be able to find me there if I invite them on Sunday.

People will want personal spaces – maybe more than one – and professional spaces. These will be unique, like email addresses, phone numbers, or social media accounts.

Ultimately, the distinction between host and attendee will disappear. Everyone will be a host of their own space, and visit others.

Sometimes you need to lock your house, and you probably don’t let random strangers through the door.

If you need to invite a bunch of people to your 

 and don’t want strangers showing up, you can send your guests an access code that’s only valid for a certain period of time.

If you’re a host, you’ll be amazed by how much easier you’ll find inviting and meeting people on Toucan.
If you’re an attendee, you won’t notice much difference to the old 

. But that’s going to change. We’re building a lot of new tools for our hosts that are going to make your experience on Toucan more productive and more fun.

Toucan introduces Spaces, permanent locations for events and casual meetups.

New: Introducing Toucan Spaces

Our Events product is awesome for planning and running large events, but for day-to-day use, Spaces is the bomb. Having a 

 seems like a small thing, but to me, it’s night and day. Now, when I schedule a meeting with someone, all I have to do is create a calendar invite and drop in my Space URL. No more having to do the work twice by also scheduling it on Toucan.

Maybe I’m lazy, or maybe I schedule too many meetings 🙂. In either case, I now use Toucan Spaces many times a day with no friction at all.

I like to personalize things with the artifacts: books, CDs, artwork, and bric-à-brac I pickup here and there. As I’ve complained before, digital life is robbing us of the ability to surround ourselves with all these things. Sorry, but NFTs don’t make the cut.

I can’t bring all my things into my Toucan Space, but I get around that limitation by abusing the Meeting Spots feature.

In large events Spots are meeting places. In my Space they are signposts of things I care about right now. If you come for a visit, you’ll see Spots floating around with the names of 

. That’s the music I’m currently playing during my hikes. You’ll also see spots with the names of 

 I’m reading, and you’ll very quickly get the idea that I’m on the undisciplined end of the reader spectrum. As of now I think I have five books going in parallel. On occasion I’ll add a spot with 

You can bet that as soon as our designers give me the ability to add even more things to my Space, I will!

Lots of meetings! I know that sounds boring, but it usually isn’t. When things get dull I have the uncanny ability to offend people, which has a tendency to spice things up.

I also hold “brainstorming” sessions to work through new ideas. They aren’t always very brainy, but they tend to be collaborative, even if it’s in a let’s-waste-time-together kind of way.

My primary use of Events was for hangouts, both professional and personal. Now I use my 

, even though it’s currently limited to 50 people. Some people will be surprised to hear that I don’t host bigger hangouts, but the ability to offend people does, it turns out, impact the number of people who want to get together with me on a casual basis.

Events are limited to two hours. That’s not enough. I like very loooong events.

One of the best days of my life took place in New York. It was a real-time reading of Lolita. Dozens of people were given a section of the book to read. Each brought his/her own voice to it, although 

 obviously produced the common thread. People were encouraged to leave for meals, bathroom breaks, etc. I sat through the entire novel.

I’ve sat through “Einstein on the Beach” several times. Watching 

Peter Brook’s nine hour production of “The Mahabharata”

 was also one of the best days of my life. You won’t be surprised if I tell you that the Ring Cycle operas are amongst my favorites.

As I said, I like long events. I like anything that distorts my sense of time. Events didn’t do that for me. I was forever bumping up against time limits. Spaces – ironically – have freed me from that time constraint.

Tips & Tricks: How I use my Toucan Space

Have you heard of Toucan Spaces? If so, I hope you already have one (and use it!). 😉 If not, here’s the overview. Toucan Spaces is the coolest way to experience Toucan. What’s great about Spaces is that you can 

it more than you can events. Choose a custom URL - this could be your name, your company, your organization, etc. You can also set a passcode, which you can’t do for individual one-off events. Then send that link out to whomever you’d like. The Space won’t close unless you close it, so feel free to use it 24/7.

We offer two plans for Spaces: the Small Team Plan and the Large Team Plan. The difference between these plans is the number of people you can have in your Space at one time. With a Small Team Plan, you can host up to 15 attendees; with a Large Team Plan, you can host up to 50.

At the moment, both of these plans only allow you to have 

If you created a Toucan Space to test it out, not knowing that you’d only be able to create one, and are now stuck with a URL like, “toucan-test,” “test-space,” “companytest,” or “tryingthisout,” you may not want to send that link out to other people. Don’t worry, there’s an easy fix. Just delete the Space! Once you’ve deleted your test Space, you can create a new one with a more desirable URL (as long as it isn’t already taken).

. There, you should see your Space listed up at the top, along with any other Spaces you have entered or been invited to. Click on your Space card. Once you’re on the Space info page, select “Edit this space.” In the settings on the “Basic Info” page, scroll down to the bottom and click “Delete this Space.” You’ll no longer have a test Space; feel free to make a new one.

Spaces hosts, here’s how you work within our one-Space limit 

If you know me, you know I don’t like this new normal. I don’t like being told I can’t travel, eat out, or even have in-person interactions with friends and co-workers. There’s something profoundly inhuman about these restrictions. Most people agree, whether or not they believe the restrictions are justified.

I happen to belong to an extraordinarily privileged group because I work in software. In fact, by almost any measure, my professional life has gotten better thanks to Covid. And that’s true for all my peers. Most of us, I think, are happy for our work to continue being organized as it is, and some of us have been driving towards this for a long time, despite a lot of resistance.

I haven’t worked in a proper office since 2003. Almost 20 years. I hired my first remote developers in 1995. I was working in New York and the banks were absorbing all the tech talent. We only had a few recruiting advantages:

we let our developers wear anything they wanted,

in our library. At the time, even developers had to wear suits if they worked for a bank, and a lot of them hated it. And if they slept at work it was under their desk, not on a pull-out couch.
Despite our “perks”, we still had a difficult time.

One day I ran across a brilliant developer in Spain, and hired him. Our CEO thought I was nuts, and to some extent, he was right. This was before the existence of any software to support remote work. SVN – nevermind git – didn’t exist. Skype hadn’t been invented. We talked by telephone, and ftp’ed our work back and forth. We made it work.

A few months later I hired a developer in Australia, and another in New Zealand.

Since we didn’t have universal weather apps most of our phone calls started with a weather update. In the dead of New York winters we were always jealous to hear about the mild weather in Spain and the beach weather in the antipodes.

Over time the idea of distributed work caught on and stopped being so controversial, but most of the distributed work was either technical or low-skilled. Conventional wisdom said that a company could only be effectively run if the core team was in the same place.

Until a few years ago most VCs wouldn’t fund a company that wasn’t centralized in that way. As recently as last January a friend of mine, who happens to be a VC, took to Twitter to denounce the silly idea that distributed companies could ever be efficient. I like to remind him of this when he tells me about the deals he’s considering today.

Thanks to Covid, Toucan is at the extreme end of this trend. Not only do the five founders live in four different countries, we all live in different timezones. We founded the company almost a year ago. In normal times we would have gotten together in person at least three or four times by now.

But these aren’t normal times.

We haven’t met in person since we incorporated. In fact, two of the founders I’ve never met in person. Not once. I couldn’t tell you what they look like below the neck. By now we know each other well, but I’m sure we’ll all be surprised when we finally meet. If we ever meet.

It’s odd that that’s even a question, but given the state of the world, it is.

We know we have a lot in common. We all ski/snowboard, play tennis, and love to play games. We play charades and other games on Toucan whenever we need a break from work. Like most founders, we know a lot about each other’s day-to-day circumstances as well as our likes and dislikes. A year ago I would have told you this wasn’t possible. Although we had a lot of remote work tools, we didn’t have a platform on which to comfortably socialize. Now we do.

Working distributed is painless now. But I will always miss heading out to Chinatown at 4AM with the team after getting a new release out the door. Nothing will ever taste as good as that first Tsingtao toasting another accomplishment, together.

First we distributed work. Then we distributed companies. Now we're distributing socializing.

Distributed Everything: Work, Companies & Socializing

We live in a world where we use endless virtual tools for different purposes and tasks. And it can be exhausting to get familiar with and start using a different platform. But if a different virtual meeting software makes a massive positive difference and is easy to learn, you’ll find yourself regretting not making the change earlier. But with this comes a common question among our users: “How do I convince people to start using Toucan?”.
